PST 501 Polymer Science
Polymerization and Copolymerization. Characterization of polymers. Bulk and solution properties of polymers. Manufacturing methods, properties and uses of commodity plastics, elastomers and fibers. Some speciality polymers and their uses.
PST 502 Polymer Science & Technology Laboratory
Experiments on the synthesis of polymers (solution polymerization of styrene, anionic ring opening polymerization of caprolactam, interfacaial polymerization, emulsion polymerization, urea-formaldehyde resins, alkyd resins,etc.) polymer compounding and processing (injection molding, compression molding, thermoforming, rotational molding, calendering,etc.), project studies.
PST 503 Polymer Physics
Single chain conformation, polymer melts, solution, gelation, segregation. Dynamics of chains, entanglement effects. Self-consistent field snd random phase approximation. Renormalization group and fractal concepts. Note: This course is offered to PhD students.
PST 506 Polymer Processing
Design criteria of plastics processing equipment, dies, molds and plasticating screws. Modelling and analysis of particulate solids handling, change of state and melt pumping. polymer melt flow in channels and cavities. Extrusion, injection molding, blow molding calendering, thermoforming, composites processing and secondary operations, welding, adhesion, fastening, decoration and machining of plastics.
PST 508 Characterization Techniques for Polymeric Materials
Characterization techniques for polymers and other related materials: Thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimeter, thermo-gravimetric analyzer, differential thermal analyzer, dilatometer). Particle size measurement using laser diffraction and photon correlation spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurement. Rheological characterization techniques (rheological models, capillary viscometer, rheometer, dynamic mechanical analyzer). Mechanical testing of polymeric materials (tensile testing, compression testing, bending testing (3 point and 4 point), creep test, impact test, micro and macro hardness testing).
